Brendan Gaughan and the Jasper Engines and Transmissions team made the long haul to New Hampshire from Las Vegas for Race #19 at the track know affectionately as the Magic Mile. And while they were there, crew chief Rambo Liberati reached deep into his bag of tricks and pulled out another top 10 finish, the team's seventh of the season.
Gaughan's qualifying effort put the No. 77 Dodge 25th on the starting grid and when the green flag dropped he began a slow but steady climb toward the front.
Following the first round of pit stops on Lap 57, Gaughan really found his rhythm and 30 laps later he broke into the top 15 for the first time.
When he hit pit road for the second time during the fifth caution, Rambo opted for two tires and track position, which put Gaughan eighth on the restart just past the halfway point of the race. The call eventually led to Gaughan running as high as third, but those who opted for four tire stops were starting to overtake the Jasper Engines Dodge.
A gutsy call for one final pit stop under caution on Lap 168 dropped the Jasper Dodge deep in the field to 24th but with fresher tires than everyone else, Gaughan was able to pass the competition at will.
And pass them he did.
Gaughan flew back up through the field and the last thing he wanted to see was the ninth and final yellow flag come out with less than ten laps to go.
The final four-lap sprint saw Gaughan pass four more trucks and when the checkered flag fell he was all the way back up to tenth.
“What a race!” exclaimed Gaughan after climbing from his Dodge. “The Jasper team just didn’t give up, it was a great team effort. We had a strategy and we stuck to it.
“That finish is what makes the Craftsman Truck Series so good. Chad Chaffin and I were beating and banging off each other every foot of those last two laps. After it was done we got out and gave each other high-fives. That finish was fun!”
