By Colleen Marie Lynch

Brendan Gaughan started the Chevy American Revolution 400 in the 40th position at Richmond International Raceway after having a problem with his car during qualifying.

Just after pole sitter Brian Vickers took the green, Robby Gordon brought out the first caution with a flat tire.

Brendan was in the 32nd position on the lap 14 restart. On lap 33, Dale Jr bumped rookie Brian Vickers out of the way for the lead while Brendan was in the 35th position. He passed Kyle Petty for the 34th position on lap 40.

After being stuck behind the slower car of Robby Gordon for many laps, Brendan is finally lapped by the leaders on lap 47. On lap 58, Jimmie Johnson passed Dale Jr for the lead.

Brendan moved into the 31st position after Scott Wimmer pit with a vibration.

Caution number 2 came out on lap 102 when Jeff Green bumped into the back of Kahne. Kahne retaliated by bumping into Green. Green hit the wall and had to pit. During pits, Vickers' tire rolled out of the pit box. Jimmie Johnson slowed to avoid the tire, and Kurt Busch was able to get the lead. On the lap 108 restart, Brendan was 30th.

2 laps later, Johnny Sauter got around Brendan, knocking him to the 31st position. Leader Kurt Busch is forced to pit on lap 112 after a number of his belts get knocked off. Jimmie gets the lead moving Brendan into 30th.

Jimmy Spencer hits the wall on lap 122 bringing out the third caution of the night. Brendan is in the 26th position on the lap 130 restart. Brendan is passed by Casey Mears and Robby Gordon on lap 135 moving him back to the 28th position.

Robby Gordon gets into Scott Wimmer on lap 137 causing caution number 4. Robby cut down his tire from the contact and got into the wall. On the lap 144 restart Brendan is 27th. Scott Riggs passes him a few laps later putting him in the 28th position.

Caution 5 came out on lap 151 after Jeremy Mayfield forced Brendan up against the wall. Then Terry Labonte hit Brendan from behind. Brendan was forced to pit. He came out and ran a lap under caution and then brought the car behind the wall after deciding there was too much damage.

On lap 192 Brendan returned to the track 35 laps down in the 37th position. Caution came out only one lap later when Jeremy Mayfield spun Jeff Burton into the grass. Burton looses power, but then he is able to get his car going.

Michael Waltrip leads the lap 200 restart. Only 2 laps later caution 8 came out when 2nd place Nemecheck pushes Jamie McMurray up the track spinning them both. Jimmie Johnson slowed for the caution and got spun from behind. Johnson was worried that the tow was knocked out, but after 3 pit stops under caution they decided it was just cosmetic damage. The restart was on lap 212.

On lap 241, Brendan moves into the 35th position due to Nemechek and McMurray being behind the wall. On lap 255, Tony Stewart took the lead from Michael Waltrip.

Caution 9 came out on lap 344 when Scott Riggs blew his engine. Dale Jr leads the lap 355 pit stop after not pitting.

Brendan moved up into the 34th position on lap 380 after Scott Riggs' attrition.

Dale Jr won the race by 1.481 seconds over 2nd place Jimmie Johnson. At the checkered, Mark Martin gets into Brian Vickers taking away the 7th spot.
