Texas Pre-Race Report

FACTS-IN-A-FLASH
TEXAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY
APRIL 4, 2004

2003 Texas Motor Speedway Racer of the Year Returns to the Longhorn State: On Jan. 27, Brendan Gaughan was honored as the 2003 Texas Motor Speedway Racer of the Year for winning four consecutive NASCAR Truck Series events. He received a silver belt buckle for his accomplishment at the presentation dinner and boasted to Tuff Hedeman, a World Champion Bull Rider and Gaughan family friend, seated at Gaughan’s table: “Hey Tuff, I win belt buckles, too!”

Gaughan Says the Key to Texas is Smart People and a Patient Driver: Gaughan says having smart people around him and having patience on the track as well as pit road led him to four victories at TMS.

“The key to winning at Texas is having smart people making smart decisions.” Gaughan said. “All of my wins came from taking the best equipment with the most efficient down force, and everyone should know I did not make those decisions. Where I came in to play was patience on the track and on pit road. Now, with that being said, I did learn that the hard way.”

“The last two races at [Texas Motor Speedway], I won with holes in the headlights,” he continued. “I got impatient on the track during the first race last year and then on pit road at the last race. Both times, I hit someone in the tail, which caused damage to the headlights on my Orleans Racing truck, so I had to come back in for patchwork; 200 mph tape is awesome!”

“Twice I have started from the back of the field but I knew I had a great handling truck and I was patient. The first time I started from the back was my first race at Texas in 2001 and qualifying was rained out. I still finished second. Then last year, we changed the engine after qualifying and finished first.”

The Gaughan Family Succumbs to Horsepower Persuasion: While Brendan Gaughan will drive the No. 77 Kodak Racing Dodge with horsepower provided by Penske-Jasper Engines, his mother – Paula - and his sister – Katie - will spend their weekend with horsepower of a different persuasion near Dallas. The Gaughan duo competes regularly in National Cutting Horse Association events. This week’s schedule brings them to the Gaughan family ranch in Weatherford, Texas.

No. 77 Kodak Racing Team Member has Dallas Ties: Larry Robinette, team machinist and catch-can man, hails from Garland, Texas, just east of Texas Motor Speedway.

“I moved to North Carolina in 1997,” Robinette said. “I had worked with some dirt racing teams but I really wanted to work in NASCAR, so I packed everything I could in my little Mazda pick-up and headed east. I can tell you there is not a lot that will fit in a truck that small, but it worked and here I am.”

Equipment: The No. 77 Kodak Racing team is taking chassis No. 31 to Texas Motor Speedway. No. 31 is a new Hopkins chassis. The Kodak Racing team tested No. 31 at TMS on March 23-24.
